Bringing Innovation from Lab to Land: Advancing In Vitro Culture of Woody Plants in Europe

We are member of CopyTree as a collaboration on a European level between experts for sharing and applying innovative in vitro technology on woody plants.

The in vitro culture of woody plants is moving beyond academic research and into real-world applications across horticulture and forestry. As industries respond to the pressing challenges of climate change and the evolving global demand for food and wood products, this technology is gaining momentum as a sustainable, forward-thinking solution.

Now more than ever, it is essential to address key issues related to research development, risk assessment, public perception, and commercial implementation. Tackling these challenges today will create lasting scientific, economic, and societal benefits.

To support this transition and maximize the potential of in vitro woody plant culture, we believe it is critically important to establish a European network. This initiative aims to bring together researchers from various disciplines to:

      • Share knowledge and technological innovations
      • Develop coordinated research strategies
      • Assess the risks and benefits of emerging technologies
      • Improve dialogue with stakeholders and the wider public

By connecting expertise across Europe, this collaborative platform will help shape a resilient and informed foundation for the future of plant biotechnology.

The collaboration is focused on five major challenges:

      • How can we overcome recalcitrance in a lot of woody plants?
      • What are the best tools for diagnosis, sanitation and storing clean stocks?
      • How can the production of elite clones be scaled up at an acceptable price?
      • What are the real risks of this technology?
      • How can the public be informed so that they appreciate and accept the applications and how can foresters & landowners be persuaded to invest in planting poly-clonal forests?
